Resumo (PT): A experiência da beleza não é menos misteriosa para a estética filosófica de hoje em dia do que era na idade média. Aqui, centro-me na noção de “beleza invisível” e como determinados aspectos do pensamento medieval acerca da natureza da beleza podem ser úteis ao esteta contemporâneo. Comparo alguns conceitos que permeiam todo o período medieval – de que há uma fonte transcendente da beleza visível e de que as belezas visíveis funcionam como imagens da beleza invisível – com uma concepção moderna da experiência estética, tal como expressa em autores como Clive Bell.

Abstract (EN): The experience of beauty is no less mysterious for the aesthetician today than it was in the Middle Ages. Here I focus on the notion of ‘unseen beauty’ and how certain aspects of medieval philosophizing about the nature of beauty can still be of use for the contemporary aesthetician. I draw a comparison between some concepts that pervade the whole of the Medieval period – that there is a transcendent source of visible beauty, and that visible beauties function as images of the invisible beauty – with a modern conception of aesthetic experience, as it is expressed in authors like Clive Bell.
