Abstract (EN): With the increasing awareness of the environmental crisis and energy consumption, the need for sustainable and cost-effective energy storage technologies has never been greater. Redox flow batteries fulfill a set of requirements to become the leading stationary energy storage technology with seamless integration in the electrical grid and incorporation of renewable energy sources. This review aims at providing a comprehensive introduction to redox flow batteries as well as a critical overview of the state-of-the-art progress, covering individual components, economic analysis and characterization techniques.
