Abstract (EN): The sand spit at the southern Aveiro lagoon is geomorphologically a very dynamic feature, which is currently under recession. Several groins and seawalls, built between 1972 and 1984, and more recently in 2002/2003, protect human development along this coast. Despite the provided protection there are several areas at high-vulnerability and risk of coastal erosion and flooding. These are mainly low-lying coastal plains and important human settlement intensively developed up to the 1990's. Societal, economic and environmental problems are raised with current erosion problems, notably because of possible inlet breaching Emergency works have been carried out over 5 kin of the dune system and so far been able to avoid new inlet breaching. The situation requires though a more efficient solution on the long run. To this end, are proposed in the Coastal Management Plan, artificial sand nourishments and a 10 km retreated artificial sand dune, which is currently in study. An accurate knowledge and quantitative evaluation of the medium- and long-term shoreline changes is essential for coastal zone management.
