Resumo (PT): O efeito dos sólidos na transferência de massa gás-líquido foi estudado experimentalmente numa coluna de borbulhamento para o sistema ar/água/bolas de alginato de cálcio. O coeficiente volumétrico de transferência de massa do lado do líquido, kLa, a área interfacial especifica, a, e o coeficiente individual de transferência de massa do lado do líquido, kL, foram determinados para diferentes concentrações e tamanhos de sólidos e para diferentes caudais de gás. Uma técnica de análise de imagem foi utilizada para a determinação de características de bolhas. Na gama de condições operatórias usadas, esta técnica mostrou ser adequada na caracterização de fenómenos de transferência de massa em colunas de borbulhamento. A presença de sólidos afecta negativamente o kLa, diminuindo kL e a, sendo o efeito mais pronunciado para as partículas menores. Para estas partículas a variação do kLa deve-se à variação dos seus dois componentes enquanto que para as partículas maiores a variação do kLa resulta essencialmente da variação do kL
Abstract (EN): The effect of the solids on the mass transfer characteristics in a bubble column was studied experimentally for the system air/water/beads of calcium alginate. Volumetric liquid side mass transfer coefficient, kLa, specific interfacial area, a, and liquid side mass transfer coefficient, kL, were determined under different solid concentrations, gas flow rates and solid sizes. Bubble characteristics were obtained using an image analysis technique. For the range of operating conditions used, this technique proved to be a suitable method to characterize mass transfer phenomena in bubble columns. The presence of solids affect negatively kLa, decreasing both a and kL and the effect is more pronounced for the smaller particles. For these particles the variation of kLa is due to the variation of its two components, while for larger particles kLa variation is due, essentially, to changes in kL as no significant differences in a were observed.
