Abstract (EN):
The topic of performance is a recurrent theme in most branches of management, especially regarding concepts and levels of analysis. Nonetheless, only a small part of literature explicitly devotes attention to the causality effects between organizational behavior, business strategies or economic environment and (ex post) firm performance, such as firm size, firm age, social responsibility, ownership structure, market diversification, innovation policies, industry concentration or macroeconomic conditions. Overcoming this empirical gap, this study addresses the performance of SMEs operating in the wholesale of electrical household appliances sector. We also provide first-hand results regarding the relation between innovation, internationalization and Portuguese SME¿s business performance. Our results show that family firms have a positive impact on the performance and total debt and crisis have a negative impact on the performance of companies operating in this sector. © 2019, Springer International Publishing AG, part of Springer Nature.
