Abstract (EN):
The behaviour of steel frames, namely stiffness, resistance and mode of failure, depend on the mechanical response of its components. In this work the safety of steel frames taking under consideration the properties of the connections, namely its stiffness, will be analyzed. The model herein considered takes in account the randomness of the material characteristics, geometric imperfections, loads and stiffness of the connections. To compute the probability of failure as well as the sensitivity of the response in order to the basic variables, the Stochastic Finite Element Method is used.
As an example, a single bay frame with rigid and semi-rigid connections is analyzed. The influence of the connections properties randomness in the safety of steel frames, to both ultimate and service limit states, is studied and the relevant results are remarked. With the studied examples it was verified that the adoption of semi-rigid connections as well as the mean and variance of the connections'stiffness has a great influence in the structural safety.
