Abstract (EN):
The energy dissipation behind a hydraulic structure was experimentally studied with the aid of Laser-Doppler
anemometry. Special attention has been given to the investigation of the behaviour of the rock protection bed in response to a
variety of flow conditions. The flow field over the rip-rap was studied in order to asses its efficiency in preventing damage to the
foundations of the hydraulic structure as well as in protecting the river bed from erosion. To conduct this study, measurements of
mean velocity and turbulence intensities were carried out using laser-Doppler anemometry. A detailed description of the
experimental apparatus and instrumentation is given in a specific section. The results obtained are compared with the empirical
laws available in literature. Discrepancies between the theoretical predictions and the measured scour profiles were observed.
