Abstract (EN):
As part of a study devoted to the high temperature behaviour of SG cast irons, the ferritic transformation during isothermal holding after austenitising has been previously investigated by dilatometry. At the beginning of the holding, it was observed that the material undergoes a contraction, which could be experimentally related to the carbon desaturation of austenite. This initial step was found to delay the growth of ferrite by a time similar to the so-called incubation time. In an attempt to better understand the various processes occurring during temperature cycling of SG cast irons, this paper reports results concerned with experiments carried out in the austenite field. Experiments consisted to follow the length change of samples during temperature cycling above the eutectoid reaction. Three well-inoculated SG cast irons with various levels of Mn and Cu have been investigated. It was found that cycling does not affect significantly the overall dimension of the samples, and that alloying additions do not have any effect. However, as in the previous work, predictions assuming purely diffusive transfer of carbon do not agree with the measured times for dimensional changes. Additional considerations assuming coupling between diffusion and stresses and interfacial reaction limiting the transfer of carbon will be considered.
