Abstract (EN):
The Newtonian fluid flow through square/square sudden contractions, with
contraction ratios of 2.4:1, 4:1 and 8:1, was investigated both experimental and numerically.
Flow visualisations and detailed velocity field measurements using Particle Image
Velocimetry (PIV) were undertaken at low Reynolds numbers (Re ¿ 30). The experimental
results are also compared to computation obtained using a finite-volume numerical method.
In both approaches, the results show a reduction of the size and strength of the corner vortex
with the increase of the flow inertia and revealed a helicoidal flow within the vortical
structure.
