Resumo (PT):
The "gaussianity" of natural images has historically imposed the conventional 2nd order statistics approach to the image coding problem. But, as will be shown, the non-natural images present in the hybrid video coder are far from "gaussianity". Consequently the design of non-natural image coding transformations should contemplate the maximisation of higher-order statistics independence in parallel with maximisation of 2nd order statistics independence. In this paper the new optimal transform coding problem is formulated and it will be called Higher-Order Karhunen-Loève Transform (HOKLT). It will be shown that this problem corresponds to the Independent Component Analysis (ICA) with one additional restriction: the transformation should be equientropic.
