Resumo (PT): O texto parte do conceito de rede familiar para enquadrar o movimento migratório e a instalação de uma parte masculina de uma família numerosa de Abragão, Penafiel, no Brasil, na sequência da migração anterior de um ramo cognato. Nos meados do século XIX encontramos vários elementos da família Mello e Sousa estabelecidos no comércio do Rio de Janeiro, com ligações estreitas numa fase inicial e percursos posteriores autónomos. Procuramos seguir o lastro destes emigrantes, sinalizando apoios familiares e transações comerciais nos percursos mais relevantes.

Abstract (EN): The text starts from the concept of family network to frame the migratory movement and the installation of a male part of a large family from Abragão, Penafiel, in Brazil, following the previous migration of a cognate branch. In the middle of the 19th century, we found several elements of the Mello e Sousa family established in the trade of Rio de Janeiro, with close connections at an early stage and later autonomous routes. We seek to follow the backing of these emigrants, signaling family support and commercial transactions on the most relevant individual life histories.
