Abstract (EN):
Immunosupressive agents have been used in Gastroenterology for some decades. The first drugs used were glucocorticoids and azathioprine, based on their clinical efficacy, without a clear understanding of the pathogenic mechanisms of the diseases. Organ transplantation development, allowed a greater insight in cellular and molecular signalling mechanisms, and the introduction of new immunosupressive agents, with higher selective and synergistic activity combined with less toxicity. During the last decade, numerous immunosupressive drugs with known immunomodulatory effects have been introduced in clinical practice. The aplicability of this new drugs is behind liver transplantation, being effective, in autoimmune hepatic diseases and inflammatory bowel disease.
