Abstract (EN):
Pyogenic granulomas are overgrowths of vascular tissue associated with local trauma, which bleed easily, without pain or pruritus. The authors reviewed 33 patients with pyogenic granuloma treated at our Department of Plastic, Reconstructive, Aesthetic and Maxillofacial Surgery. Twenty patients had no relevant pathologic history and only six remembered a previous local trauma. The hand was involved in the majority of patients (60.6%). Surgical excision was the way of treatment in all patients, without any case of recurrence. Pyogenic granuloma is a misnamed entity, which was associated with a previous local trauma in only six patients. So, other unknown aetiological factors are probably equally important. All patients had easy bleeding but only five patients had painful complaints, which is typical of this entity. Although pyogenic granuloma is, definitely, a benign skin lesion, histological confirmation is always needed for a correct differential diagnosis. Total surgical excision is the treatment of choice, allowing histological diagnosis and symptomatic relief.
