Abstract (EN): The Trezoi bridge is one of the metallic railway bridges of the international Beira Alta route, inaugurated in 1956 and located in one of the main Portuguese routes for freight traffic. A preoccupation with the integrity of this type of bridges led to a cooperation of the Laboratory of Vibrations and Monitoring (ViBest) of FEUP with the Portuguese railway administration. In this context, that research group has been developing an investigation on the evaluation of the dynamic behaviour and fatigue condition of this infrastructure. This paper describes several numerical and experimental studies that have been conducted for that purpose, involving in particular the following tasks: i) numerical simulation of the dynamic behaviour of the bridge under railway traffic, considering or not the dynamic bridge-vehicles interaction; ii) performance of an ambient vibration test, which was used to update and validate the finite element modeling; iii) estimation of the fatigue residual life using the numerical traffic simulation and taking into account both different code specifications and the characteristics of real trains circulating over the bridge; iv) performance of strain measurements at the most critical elements, based on a set of electrical strain gages, aiming the experimental validation of the numerical modeling and the evaluation of loads spectra and fatigue assessment.
