Abstract (EN):
Maize (Zea mays L. cv. Colt) calli were induced and grown on modified MS medium. Calli were irradiated during seven days with UV-C light (3.170 mWcm(-2)) for 15 min. Most irradiated calli became dark, with burnt necrotic areas, but from those regions in which growth was maintained, a white friable tissue developed. Some weeks after UV-irradiation, regeneration of healthy white roots from the new calli was observed. UV-C irradiation decreased by 50% callus fresh weight after 15 days. Irradiated calli showed a decrease in K+ and Ca2+ and L-proline content, whereas soluble protein levels increased. In irradiated cells, peroxidase activity decreased but a-amylase activity was stimulated.
