Abstract (EN):
This work aims to give a description of the applicability of OSL methods to date coastal terraces in central
and northern mainland Portugal. These Pleistocene sedimentary records along the coast of western Portugal were previously dated with limited methods or on limited sites. SAR Qz-OSL usually only can provide ages (not minimum ages) up to 120-150 ka. However, the new pIRIR protocol often provides finite reliable ages up to 200 ka (MIS7), less often up to 350 ka (MIS9) and rarely up to 400 ka (MIS11) or 600 ka (MIS15), depending on the sediment dose rate of the sample. So, only the two lower marine terrace levels, that correlate to MIS 5 (75-130 ka) and MIS 7 (190-240 ka) are expected to be dated (finite ages) in all the study area. The OSL dating will support stratigraphic correlations, reconstruction of the interaction between uplift and sea-level changes, and the identification of active tectonic structures.
