Abstract (EN): Several research studies have been carried out to demonstrate building pounding between two adjacent buildings during seismic excitation. In fact, when lateral displacement exceeds the separation distance, buildings collide with each other and severe damage or collapse can occur in the structural elements. To measure the impact force and also to calculate the dissipated energy, a non-real link element is considered between the two bodies. These link elements are modeled by a spring and a dashpot, which are located parallel with each other. In order to simulate the dashpot and use the equation of motion to calculate the value of dissipated energy, many researchers have suggested different formulas to justify the impact damping ratio and also the impact force. In this paper, the state-of-the-art relating to these equations is given and different formulas are explained. For all the discussed cases, impact forces based on time and the lateral displacement is depicted to show the best outcome in terms of impact. © Civil-Comp Press, 2013.
