Abstract (EN):
This paper contributes to a better understanding of cantilever sign structures for highways; moreover similar structures have been designed and constructed by the metallic company Metalogalva (Trofa, Portugal) with which the authors presently collaborate. Therefore the present paper consists of the analysis of the stability and design of a cantilever sign support for a highway. This paper also presents a comparative study of the response of a cantilever sign support when subjected to natural winds with and without a TMD. A methodology for simulating natural wind histories for in-service behaviour of these structures is presented. The numerical model used in the current paper, suggests that the present model will be able to capture important aspects of the dynamic response of the sign support structure. Concerning the application of TMDs, it was concluded that this device is proving to be effective in terms of displacement and acceleration reductions when the structure is subjected to series of artificially generated natural wind. © Civil-Comp Press, 2013.
