Resumo (PT): Depois de interiorizado o programa, o lugar de intervenção e as reflexões conceptuais, os primeiros instantes de concepção de um projecto de arquitectura passam por um momento quase intuitivo que resume na ideia de projecto toda a informação absorvida e os caminhos a percorrer. Para que esse momento seja interiorizado no método de trabalho, é fundamental o domínio de todas as informações e instrumentos, sejam eles ferramentas de desenho em projecto ou a matéria que se pretende construir o edifício. Assim, usar a matéria e as suas especificidades para compor um edifício pode ser tão intuitivo como desenhar uma recta para compor uma figura. Esta consciencialização passa antes de mais por uma íntima reflexão metodológica no acto de projectar em arquitectura, procurando conhecer a matéria para construir a ideia, usando o processo construtivo como instrumento de desenho. Mais do que encontrar soluções construtivas ideias e tecnologias milagrosas, pretendeu-se com este trabalho, abrir espaço para uma reflexão sobre a importância da interiorização do processo construtivo nos primeiros momentos da concepção arquitectónica, usando as alvenarias resistentes nas construções tradicionais portuguesas como objecto de estudo para essa reflexão. Numa primeira fase tentar-se-á encontrar os princípios metodológicos implícitos na concepção arquitectónica com alvenarias resistentes, desde o entendimento do processo, sistema e método construtivo, passando pela significação da parede na concepção arquitectónica do edifício, até a definição de alvenaria e em particular da alvenaria resistente. Como verificação desses princípios, numa segunda fase, será feita uma leitura das principais tecnologias tradicionais portuguesas, olhando para a arquitectura popular como objecto de estudo, tentando entender as especificidades dos componentes, a construção dos elementos, para finalmente apontar as regras que estão implícitas na concepção arquitectónica. Como resultado desta consciencialização construtiva na concepção arquitectónica serão abordados alguns projectos contemporâneos onde foram adoptadas tecnologias construtivas tradicionais de alvenarias resistentes com linguagens perfeitamente contemporâneas, desde a reabilitação, reconstrução e novas construções.

Abstract (EN): After acknowledging the program, the site and the theoretical reflections, the first instants of conception of an architecture project bear an almost intuitive moment that sums up into the project idea both the information engaged and the paths to explore. For that moment to be accredited within the work method it is fundamental to dominate all the information and instruments whether they are the project drawing tools or the material the building will be made of. Thus, the use of the material and its requisites to compose a building become as intuitive as drawing a line when composing a figure. This consciousness comes first of all from an intimate methodological reflection during the action of projecting in architecture while searching to know the material in order to build the idea, using the process of construction as a drawing tool. This research went beyond the search for ideal construction solutions or miracle technologies. Instead, it aimed at opening up a space for reflection on the importance of acknowledging the construction process in the early stages of the architecture conception. The object of study chosen to carry on that reflection was the structural masonry of traditional Portuguese constructions. While looking at the significance of the wall in the architectural conception of the building, the first stage seeks to find the methodological principles inherent to architectural conception with structural masonry, from the understanding of the process, system and construction method to the definition of masonry, in particular the structural masonry. As confirmation to such principles, the research undergoes a second stage, where a reading of the main traditional Portuguese technologies is done under the object of study of the vernacular architecture, in quest of understanding the specificities of its components and the construction of the elements, in order to, finally, outline the regulations and concepts that are inherent to architectural conception. As a result of this construction consciousness in architectural conception some contemporary projects that adopted traditional construction technologies of solid masonry with contemporary language are looked upon, ranging from renewal, to reconstruction and new constructions.
