Resumo (PT): O Jornal de Notícias foi um jornal lançado no Porto em 1888. Apesar de estar ligado ao Partido Regenerador, como estava presente no seu panfleto de lançamento, desde cedo introduziu um estilo popular e acessível a um público mais amplo que aquele que era tradicionalmente constituído pelas elites políticas, sociais e intelectuais, o público dos jornais por excelência. No final do século XIX, as condições de vida na cidade do Porto eram difíceis, com grandes índices de pobreza e falta de desenvolvimento urbano, sendo elevados os níveis de analfabetismo. No seu período inicial, e apesar de suas raízes políticas, o Jornal de Notícias desenvolveu uma nova linha de publicação, que pode ser entendida como moderna por oposição ao conservadorismo dos jornais portugueses, que mantiveram uma perspetiva editorial mais elitista e ideológica ou publicista. O desenvolvimento do jornalismo popular em Portugal foi lento em virtude da resistência dos círculos jornalísticos e intelectuais. A dificuldade em aceitar mudanças levou a que a imprensa mantivesse a sua matriz política, sendo o seu desenvolvimento e difusão prejudicados. A adoção de um modelo de alta cultura contra a noção de baixa cultura (Zelizer, 1999) por parte de jornalistas e proprietários de jornais residia na perspetiva de que o jornalismo era uma forma de exercício da literatura ou um instrumento ideológico. Na viragem do século XIX e no período subsequente, registou-se uma mudança política editorial de alguns jornais, que acabaram por adotar a tendência da imprensa popular internacional. As capas passaram a incluir temas destacados, diversidade temática, ilustrações e fotografias ou outros assuntos mais atrativos (Campbell, 2001). Esta nova abordagem mais ligeira atraiu um público mais vasto. A imprensa evoluiu para um formato mais informativo e por vezes com imagens de impacto. Este foi o caso do Jornal de Notícias, que desde sua fundação e até aos anos 20 do século seguinte, evoluiu de um modelo editorial político para um formato de imprensa popular, embora com a inclusão de uma narrativa um tanto sensacionalista. A factualidade dramática do quotidiano faz parte da história do jornal, em que temas como os suicídios e crimes eram recorrentes. As narrativas destas notícias eram marcadas por uma carga emocional muito acentuada, às vezes com um tom mórbido e adjetivamte que rompia com o estilo mais austero e tradicional do jornalismo portuense. Os textos construíam-se com inúmeros detalhes, muitas vezes tratados de forma continuada, em vários números, uma espécie de adiantamento do "follow up" de Pulitzer. O objetivo deste trabalho é a análise das formas de jornalismo popular encontradas no Jornal de Notícias, na sua fase inicial, através dos temas e narrativas encontradas, tendo em conta as tabelas de análise estabelecidas pelos autores de referência deste campo de estudo

Abstract (EN): Jornal de Notícias was a political newspaper launched in Oporto in 1888, when the city began a period of growth and urban improvements. Despite being a project of the Regenerator Party, Notícias soon adopted a popular and easy style directed to a wider audience, unlikely the traditional political and literary press that was mostly read by the political and social elites. The facts that are the life of the urban centers progressively became part of the newsfeed: small passionate dramas, various disasters that ravaged the city, crime and other events such as fires, floods, facts that gained prominent place in Jornal de Noticias¿ agenda. In this initial period, the newspaper, despite its political roots, developed a new news discourse that may be seen as modern in comparison to the conservatism of the Portuguese newspapers and particularly the Oporto press that kept the elitist editorial perspective either ideological or publicist. The adoption of a high cultural model against the idea of low culture (Zelizer, 1999) by journalists and owners of newspapers stems from the idea that journalism was a literary form of expression or an ideological exercise. In Portugal, the last decade of the 19th century and in the beginning of the 20th, was a period of transformations in political newspapers that gradually followed the trend of the international popular press. The covers adopted headlines with a variety of subjects, illustrations and photographs or other attractive matters (Campbell, 2001). This new popular approach attracted a wider audience. Articles with "human interest" reached the first page, like big events. The covers were more attractive drawing the attention of new readers. Such was also the case of Jornal de Notícias that from its foundation to the beginning of the next century evolved from the political model to an example of popular press, with a somewhat sensationalist narrative for the events. Fait-divers were part of the history of this newspaper and great impact subjects like suicides, were a recurring theme. The narratives of dramatic events adopted a strong emotional charge, sometimes with a morbid tone, which broke with the austere style of Oporto¿s traditional journalism. This pattern of dramatization was also visible in the everyday news. The protagonists of the events were at times portrayed as heroes of adventure and stories full of detail were built, often treated continuously in multiple numbers, somehow replicating the Pulitzer¿s "follow up" guideline. The aim of this paper is to analyze the forms of popular tabloid journalism in Jornal de Notícias, in its initial period, through the narrative formats, thematic and agenda, taking into account the analysis frame set out by the authors of reference in this theme.
