Abstract (EN):
Water pollution is a complex problem which requires understanding its spatial distribution. Geographical Information Systems (GIS) provide useful tools to manipulate the factors that control groundwater vulnerability to pollution. This article presents the development of a tool to produce maps under a GIS open source environment. The application was developed through Quantum GIS (QGIS) software. The tool is developed based on the DRASTIC index and incorporates some procedures under a plugin. This method comprises the generation of several maps corresponding to each factor taken into account and, finally, a global map displaying the spatial distribution of the index. One of the main advantage of this application is the easiness to use. The user can generate the maps according to his perception regarding the available information including field observations. The application is free non-profit institutions or individual users and intends to be useful for water resources management. © 2014, LNEG ¿ Laboratório Nacional de Geologia e Energia IP.
