Resumo (PT):
The present work aims at characterizing and evaluating the out-of-plane seismic performance of stone masonry
walls through field experimental tests and their behaviour improvement resorting to strengthening methods. In this
line, several in-situ experimental tests were carried out using an innovative technique to mobilize walls of existing
constructions damaged by the Azores 9th July 1998 earthquake. It is worth mentioning that strengthening
techniques as used during the reconstruction process were also applied to the previous tested walls in order to
improve their seismic resistance, thus providing a means of assessing the seismic adequacy of those techniques.
Finally, a full comparison is presented concerning the different applied techniques and the seismic performance
improvement when compared to URM constructions, taking into account maximum strength, displacement
capacity and energy dissipation, among other issues.
