Abstract (EN):
The prevalence of musculoskeletal symptoms has been found high among dental practitioners and symptoms seem to appear soon after a short period of clinical practice. This study aims to investigate the 12 months prevalence of musculoskeletal symptoms among a cohort of Portuguese dental students, and find out if there is any significant association with socio-demographic variables. Results showed that the prevalence of musculoskeletal symptoms is high. 91.6% of the respondents reported musculoskeletal symptoms in at least one body region during the preceding 12 months and the most affected body regions were lower back and neck (67.0%), upper back (56.8%), shoulders (41.0%) and wrists/hands (33.3%). However, few significant associations were found between reported symptoms and the socio-demographic variables. Understanding the causes and mechanisms for the onset and progression of musculoskeletal disorders is a fundamental step for the design of effective prevention strategies.
