Abstract (EN): The heavy machinery maintenance activity sector is characterized by the occurrence of intense noise during the working shift. This noise evaluation in the workplace was conducted to assess the noise emission during the task of removing tracks from an excavator, and to characterize in detail the nature of the risk in the sense of controlling the workers exposure to occupational noise. The measurements were made according to both the Portuguese and international framework, a narrow band analysis was made to the noise using the 1/1 octave band analysis method. In the measurements the presence of high intensity noise levels was showed with frequencies above 1 kHz. It was recognized the advantage of using a double protection system consisting in the simultaneous use of earplugs and earmuffs, granting a continuous protection implementing the obligation of earplugs use and making earmuffs use compulsory. According to these findings, this practice became mandatory.
