Abstract (EN): The continuously increasing demand for quality food for humans in parallel with the challenge of lowering the cost of producing them have been the main motives of the rapid development of the animal nutrition science. During the last century, advanced analytical methods have been developed, facilitating the study of the role and function of all dietary nutrients on growth, feed utilization, metabolism, body composition, and health of the cultivated organisms. In aquaculture, the issues associated with nutrition and feeding are in many aspects different compared to other terrestrial animal production systems. This is due to a number of factors like the large number of aquatic species cultivated, the differences of physiology and behavior among them and the nature of the medium where aquatic organisms spend their lives. For these reasons as well as the fact that intensive aquaculture is a relatively new food production activity, the knowledge on fish nutrition and feeding is still limited. This chapter attempts to review the current knowledge on the nutrition and feeding of cultivated Sparidae species worldwide. It focuses mainly on the requirements of these commercially important fish for dietary protein, lipid, carbohydrates, vitamins, minerals, and energy as well as on feed formulation aspects related to the available ingredients currently utilized for Sparidae diets. © 2011 Blackwell Publishing Ltd.
