Abstract (EN):
The objective of this work was to determine criteria of identifying contaminated soils related with mining activity from São Pedro da Cova, Gondomar (north of Portugal). There were considered 21 samples, from contaminated soil and uncontaminated soil, taking into account the type of soil and distance to the contaminant source. The samples were collected in July 2012 and January 2013, upstream and downstream of the three galleries of the mine. The magnetic susceptibility (MS), pH and Electric Conductivity (EC) were measured in all the samples. The MS ranged between 38.63x10-8 m3 kg-1 (A6) and 4057.24 x10-8 m3 kg-1 (A7), near gallery 3 without active drainage. Forest soils located outside the influence of mining effluents (A2, S2, A4, A5, A8, M1 and T2) obtained intermediate values of MS and low pH and EC. Forest soils located along the drainage channels currently with drainage (A1, A6 and S6), present low values of MS and high values of pH and EC. Generally, agricultural soils had higher values of MS due to the homogenization of soil and irrigation with water from mining effluents. The soils of mining landfills obtained similar values of MS, pH and EC. The A8 sample had a high value of MS that may result from the occurrence of forest fires in recent years. The T2 sample had a high value of MS that may be due to the influence of road traffic. There were no negative MS values, indicating the absence of diamagnetic particles. The soils exhibit ferromagnetic and paramagnetic particles. The techniques of environmental magnetism proved to be an important assessment tool in soils when combining with pH and EC measurements. © 2014, LNEG ¿ Laboratório Nacional de Geologia e Energia IP.
