Centro de Investigação em Química da Universidade do Porto (CIQUP) is a research center in chemistry
located at the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry of University of Porto. It is mainly an experimental
R&D unit, with an established reputation in Portugal. Solid international acclaim has been obtained for its
relevant contributions in: molecular and supramolecular thermodynamics; electroanalytical and interfacial
chemistry; chemi- and bioluminescence; chemical/biochemical sensing; nanochemistry and nanomaterials;
ionic liquids; medicinal chemistry; physical chemistry of self-organized systems; excited state reactivity
dynamics. CIQUP is also committed to chemical education and dissemination and promotion of research
findings.
In pursuing CIQUP Mission statement,
"Attain excellence in chemistry, both in research activity and in advanced training of human resources and to
contribute to disseminate chemical knowledge",
a set of strategic principles have been defined:
- Explore the appraised level of excellence;
- Develop the interactions with industry;
- Expand and reinforce collaborations and networks;
- Attract talented researchers and students.
The R&D unit is focused on the following topics:
. 1. Nanostructures, nanosystems and nanomaterials;
. 2. Ionic liquids and DES, properties and applications;
. 3. Electrochemical and Molecular Recognition Sensors;
. 4. Excited state reactivity dynamics;
. 5. New chemical identities for health applications;
. 6. Environmental mobility properties of chemicals;
. 7. Molecular and Supramolecular thermodynamics of organic compounds;
. 8. Drug/receptor & biomolecule/membrane thermodynamics;
. 9. Chemistry and Society.
All members of CIQUP are committed to science outreach, by supporting proactive initiatives related with the
public dissemination and perception of science, like seminars, participations in science fairs, webinars, open
days and workshops.

Since 2015, CIQUP is organized in four research groups (RG), which reflect its core areas of competence,
designated as:
. RG1. Medicinal Chemistry;
. RG2. Molecular and Supramolecular Thermodynamics;
. RG3. Nanostructures and Self-Organization;
. RG4. Physical Analytical Chemistry & Electrochemistry.
Each of the four research groups has its own research profile but they are closely linked in research carrying
out a wide range of cooperative activities under two thematic lines:
. TL1. MATERIALS CHEMISTRY & NANOSCIENCE;
. TL2. PHYSICAL, BIOPHYSICAL & MEDICINAL CHEMISTRY.
CIQUP integrates 24 Senior PhD members with different academic backgrounds anchored in chemistry
(chemists, biochemists and pharmacists) who belong to faculty of science staff and other higher education
institutions and 24 Postdoctoral researchers funded by FCT or by R&D projects who give the research unit the
capability to tackle complex topics in emerging and multidisciplinary areas in science.
The unit also hosts 30 PhD and 13 MSc students. During the period 2013-2017 nearly 50% (244 in a total of
502) of the scientific publications of CIQUP were published by 75 journals of the 1st quartile in the scientific
areas of activity of the unit with an average weight impact factor of 4.4.
All PhD researchers belong to the Scientific Council of the unit. CIQUP Executive Council comprises the
Group leaders elected by the group members. The Coordinator chairs the Executive and Scientific Councils. |
