Details
Summary: The use of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and curvilinear carbon fibres to enhance the vibratory and flutter characteristics of panels will be explored. CNTs will be applied to passively control vibrations and flutter by increasing stiffness and damping. In addition, the stiffness of the multiscale hybrid composites will be optimised by disposing carbon fibres along curvilinear fibre paths. It is expected that the new panels to be developed will find use in high-performance applications, including in aircraft. The project includes: manufacturing of multiscale hybrid laminated composite panels; development, verification and correction of theoretical models for those panels; analyses of vibrations and flutter of the panels. The orientation of fibres along curvilinear paths, the CNT proportion and the CNT distribution will be explored, with the goals of increasing resonance frequencies and critical flutter speed, and decreasing the respective response amplitudes, with minimum weight penalties.
