Summary: The employment landscape has shifted significantly over the past years.
One of the challenges to be addressed focuses on PhD graduates' employability and the way to emphasize their professional competencies developed during their PhD.
Research positions within universities are becoming fewer In number. Each of the partner Universities has numerous links between companies, whether through formal links (e.g. research, teaching and entrepreneurial), careers office's links, or the alumni office.
lfhe interaction with several European companies has underscored the need of enhancing professional values of PhDs.
Companies'needs are evolving and industry is slowly starting to realize that traditional skills possessed by graduate recruits are Insufficient; further advanced skills such as developing novel solutions via research while optimizing the often conflicting client requirements are necessary to remain competitive and survive in a market where cost and quality often compete with each other.
This new direction of becoming more research-oriented suits PhD graduates and opens up new opportunities for the latter other 1 lhan academia. Traditional PhDs however, despite being very strong in providing these advanced skills, they often lack the extra raining necessary to enter the corporate world at higher levels than a typical graduate level positions, PhD graduates also learn to manage their own PhD uproject", but require more training in managing multi-projects with several teams, understanding the various constraints and issues arising from the latter interactions. They must adopt an economic and business oriented mindset by making a continual connection between the sclentifidtechnical aspects of research and the development of knowledge and skills
directed at innovation, and value creation in a European environment.
