Com acreditação renovada em 2016, o Mestrado em Criminologia apresenta atualmente um NOVO PLANO DE ESTUDOS. Este corresponde a 120 ECTS e passa a prever a possibilidade de Unidades Curriculares opcionais no 2º semestre, de modo a que os estudantes melhor possam adequar o seu percurso académico.

Conferente do grau de Mestre em Criminologia, o presente Ciclo de Estudos conduz à apresentação de uma dissertação científica em Criminologia. A mera conclusão com aproveitamento das unidades curriculares dos 1.º e 2.º semestres corresponde ao Curso de Especialização em Criminologia não conferente de grau.

Courses Units

Antisocial and Criminal Behaviour

MC118 - ECTS Within this Curricular Unit students are expected to deepen their knowledge within the domain of etiologic Criminology, by having first hand contact with the main pieces of work produced within the study of the etiological bases of antissocial and criminal behavior. 

For each of the theoretical models and perspectives, its foundational texts, as well as recent empirical evidence within the perspective will be studied, by directlu contacting with original texts.

Students will recognie the interdsiciplinarity of Criminology, by contacting with the most recent integrative models.

Governance, Control and Normativities

MC119 - ECTS Theoretical-practical classes, combining the exposition of theoretical content with autonomous literature review. Students will complement the knowledge transmitted in class with the analysis of key readings in each module.

Research Methodologies and Epistemology I

MC108 - ECTS

-Acquire knowledge in qualitative and quantitative research methods and its recent developments in the criminological field.
-Acquire training in reading and understand scientific work carried out in both qualitative and quantitative criminological domains.
-Lead students to formal thinking applied to social problems in general and to the study of crime and justice in particular.
-To develop knowledge and methodological and technical skills (qualitative and quantitative) that could converge to the individual research project of the student.

Issues in Criminal Law and Procedural Criminal Law I

MC107 - ECTS - Giving the students the basic concepts on patrimonial criminality and entreprises offences.
- Profound analysis on the main offences.
- Stimulating the critical spirit and personal ellaboration on the syllabus, especially the ability to relate them.
- Stimulating students' authonomy in terms of legal investigation.

Tutorial Seminar I

MC110 - ECTS

Develop a systematic reflection and integration of theoretical and empirical knowledge acquired throughout the course, around the larger areas of criminology (e.g. juvenile delinquency, criminology, clinical, experimental criminology, comparative criminology, victimology, security and social control).

Topics of Criminology

MC106 - ECTS

The main purpose of this course is to introduce to the structure, systems and function of the criminological thinking. In that sense, the course aims to:
- Develop a first interdisciplinary and integrated perspective of the criminological field (epistemological, theoretical and methodological levels).
- Provide an overview of the fundamental and applied contemporary criminology.
- Identify the main principles of theoretical paradigms and their implications to criminological research
- Provide an understanding of the process of scientific research and methodological thinking
- Provide an overview of the relation between criminology and criminal justice system
- Identify major questions in the criminological interventions -- Develop the skills required to research and systematize information relevant to criminology.
Notes: the course should be considered in articulation with the course of Comportamento Antissocial e Criminal.

Topics of Victimology

MC120 - ECTS

To analyze the emergence of victimology as an area of ​​scientific knowledge and its position in the face of criminology.

Prospecting the victim as object of study and knowledge: different classifications, typologies and definitions.

Reflect on the role of the victim of crime.

To know the different types of violence, crime, victimization, as well as the methods of study of the victim and victimization.

Understand and reflect critically on the victim's position in the criminal justice system, its rights and needs, and frame it in the national and international legal-political developments produced in this area.

To understand the specific dynamics and reflect critically on the main tendencies on Victimology.

Reflect on the main debates and critical approaches regarding some forms of victimization in the Portuguese and international contexts.

Provide students with the basic frameworks and concepts for a correct perspective and integration of the relationships between victimization, vulnerability and intervention.

It is intended that students acquire knowledge in the scope of evaluation and intervention with victims of crime.

Critically analyze in its essential aspects the different forms of intervention and the processes of support to the victims.

Criminological Analysis

MCO101 - ECTS

-To acquire knowledge about the principal indicators and sources of data on crime and justice and other related indicators produced nationally and internationally at micro, meso and macro levels of analysis.

-To provide the students with analytical skills, both at theoretical level and at methodological level on the knowledge produced from the different indicators.

- To acquire and deepen the knowledge and methodological and technical skills necessary for the collection and critical analysis that can support the criminological scientific research.

-Conduct the students to formal thinking applied to the analysis of social phenomena and problems in general and crime and justice in particular from this crime analyzers and correlates.

 

 

Economic Crime

MCO104 - ECTS In the first part of the lectures, in addition to explaining the differences between economic crimes and other offenses, the attention is directed to the presentation of the theories explaining their commitment, emphasizing the role of market failures in the creation of opportunities for economic and financial crime, as well as the most recent advances in the literature on the role of social inequality and anomie in the commitment of this type of crimes.

The second part of the course will look at economic crimes and globalization, including new opportunities for offenses, circulation of potential offenders, trans-national victimization and harms. Glocal prevention and deterrence mechanisms will also be addressed.

The last part of the course will present existing compliance and control mechanisms for economic offenses. Supported in evidence-based results, axisting different models will be presented as well as benefits and limitations of each.

Clinical Criminology and Risk of Recidivism Assessment

MCO105 - ECTS

- Knowledge of the main clinical models in criminology

- Knowledge about the empirical foundation of risk assessment tools

- Develop basic skills to the judicious use of risk assessment tools

Criminological Intervention in the Justice System

MCO106 - ECTS

- Knowledge of the main theoretical models for offender rehabilitation and supervision

- Knowledge about intervention programs with adults and young offenders, as well with specific offender populations.

- Develop skills to planning and implementing evidence-based interventions with offenders

Restorative Justice and Victimology

MCO107 - ECTS

The Curricular Unit has as main objectives to provide the approach of the main theoretical and empirical developments on the practices and processes of restorative justice and their institutionalization in the context of criminal justice systems. The approach will give priority to the relationship between the developments of restorative justice and victimology.

At the end of UC, it is expected that students are able to:

 - Develop a comprehensive and critical approach to the needs of victims and their position in the criminal justice system.

- Develop a comprehensive and critical approach to restorative justice based on knowledge of key concepts and principles

-Be acquainted and explore different restorative models

- Recognize and formulate questions related to fundamental and applied research on the subject.

Research Methodologies and Epistemology II

MC112 - ECTS

This curricular unit, divided into two parts - qualitative methodologies and quantitative methodologies – follows Research Methodologies and Epistemology I, taught in the 1st semester, aiming to complement the training provided by that curricular unit. Thus, its main objective is to provide conditions for students to deepen and solidify knowledge about qualitative analysis and quantitative analysis techniques, not only in theoretical terms, but especially at the applied level and especially using specific software. In this way, it is intended to enable students to understand the scientific literature with which they are confronted and to develop their own scientific production, namely within the scope of their Master's research projects in Criminology.

Situational and Community Prevention

MCO103 - ECTS

-To know how to define conceptually and identify the main theoretical orientations underlying situational crime prevention and community prevention.

-To be able to identify the different policies, models and logics underlying intervention of each type of crime prevention.

-To know the major situational prevention and community programs both at the national level and at international level.

Social and Developmental Prevention

MCO102 - ECTS This course aims: 1) Understand the phenomenon of juvenile delinquency in the different dimensions of assessment and intervention; 2) To provide a comprehensive approach of the most relevant developments in the field of social and developmental prevention of delinquency and antisocial behavior at international level; 3) to develop the knowledge and basic practical skills to conceive and implement a developmental intervention according to the principles of scientific risk-focused prevention; 4) to develop a critical perspective about the transfer of knowledge to improve policies and practices in delinquency intervention.

Issues in Criminal Law and Procedural Criminal Law II

MC111 - ECTS - Provide an overview of current doctrine on specific and controversial topics of criminal evidence;
- Deepen the theoretical and dogmatic bases of the studied institutes, as well as their projections in terms of legal regulation and jurisprudential solutions;
- Promote autonomous and critical reflection on central problems of the criminal procedure.

Security and Criminal Policies

MC115 - ECTS Intended learning outcomes (knowledge, skills and competences to be developed by the students) Understanding the concept of security, its complexity and the debates and critics on it. Distinguish the historical origins of the different security forms. Identify, correlate and critically reflect on the process of building up security as well as its interaction with the cycles of violence and the spiral of fear- power- control. Understand the functioning of security in the modern state and identify the problems resulting from its crisis. Identify the changes caused by globalization and the emergence of new security markets.
Identify criminal policies and security policies and the distinction between them.
Spot and describe the security policies and their cycle. Name the protagonists of the security policies and their resources. Critically analyze the public security policies.

Tutorial Seminar II

MC114 - ECTS The development of a systematic integration and analysis of the theoretical and empirical contents learned
during the course, in order to train skills and prepare the students for the preparation and conduction of an individual research project.

Dissertation

MC200 - ECTS

In this course, student must make an original research work, in order to write her dissertation, revealing that is holding solid knowledge in Criminology, or building an action-research project.
