Description: Com acreditação renovada em 2016, o Mestrado em Criminologia apresenta atualmente um NOVO PLANO DE ESTUDOS. Este corresponde a 120 ECTS e passa a prever a possibilidade de Unidades Curriculares opcionais no 2º semestre, de modo a que os estudantes melhor possam adequar o seu percurso académico. Conferente do grau de Mestre em Criminologia, o presente Ciclo de Estudos conduz à apresentação de uma dissertação científica em Criminologia. A mera conclusão com aproveitamento das unidades curriculares dos 1.º e 2.º semestres corresponde ao Curso de Especialização em Criminologia não conferente de grau.

Research Methodologies and Epistemology I

-Acquire knowledge in qualitative and quantitative research methods and its recent developments in the criminological field.
-Acquire training in reading and understand scientific work carried out in both qualitative and quantitative criminological domains.
-Lead students to formal thinking applied to social problems in general and to the study of crime and justice in particular.
-To develop knowledge and methodological and technical skills (qualitative and quantitative) that could converge to the individual research project of the student.

Develop a systematic reflection and integration of theoretical and empirical knowledge acquired throughout the course, around the larger areas of criminology (e.g. juvenile delinquency, criminology, clinical, experimental criminology, comparative criminology, victimology, security and social control).

Topics of Criminology

MC106 - ECTS

The main purpose of this course is to introduce to the structure, systems and function of the criminological thinking. In that sense, the course aims to:

- Develop a first interdisciplinary and integrated perspective of the criminological field (epistemological, theoretical, and methodological levels).

- Provide an overview of the fundamental and applied contemporary criminology.

- Identify the main principles of theoretical paradigms and their implications for criminological research.

- Provide an understanding of the process of scientific research and methodological thinking.

- Provide an overview of the relationship between criminology and the criminal justice system.

- Identify major questions in the criminological interventions -- Develop the skills required to research and systematize information relevant to criminology.

Notes: the course should be considered in articulation with the course of Comportamento Antissocial e Criminal.

Topics of Victimology

MC120 - ECTS

Provide a comprehensive understanding of fundamental concepts in Victimology

Perspective Victimology as a scientific field and its positioning in relation to Criminology.

Perspective the victim as an object of study and knowledge.

Frame central typologies of violence and victimization.

Analyze the physical, psychological, and emotional impact of crime on the victim.

Frame the concept of intersectionality and its application to Victimology, emphasizing the importance of considering the multiple vulnerabilities of victims.

Reflect on ethical issues in intervention and research with crime victims.

Address specific areas of Victimology and reflect on the role of Criminology, both from the perspective of intervention and research.

Criminological Analysis

MCO101 - ECTS

This curricular unit focuses on the elements underlying the analysis of the criminal phenomenon, its agents, contexts and social reaction, and it is structured around the following axes: data and its sources, measurement of the criminal phenomenon, advanced methods and tools in data research and analysis. By articulating these elements, it is specifically intended to:

  • Provide students with an organizing framework for criminological analysis to which data, measurements, methods and data analysis tools, contribute;
  • Introduce students to formal thinking applied to the analysis of social phenomena and problems in general, and crime and justice in particular, using analysers;
  • To present sources of information commonly used in the study of Criminology, critically discussing their validity and usefulness for concrete purposes of understanding criminal phenomena and social reaction;
  • To provide students with skills in the use and interpretation of existing measures of crime and related phenomena, as well as in the creation of other measures that are optimally adjusted to concrete and new problems;
  • To present the latest discussions on the challenges that Big Data and Artificial Intelligence pose for criminological analysis;
  • Integrate strategic interdependence in the study of criminal phenomena into criminological analysis and call for the use of new methods of predicting crime;
  • Present the major challenges faced by criminologists in communicating the conclusions of their analysis.

 

Economic Crime

MCO104 - ECTS In the first part of the lectures, in addition to explaining the differences between economic crimes and other offenses, the attention is directed to the presentation of the theories explaining their commitment, emphasizing the role of market failures in the creation of opportunities for economic and financial crime, as well as the most recent advances in the literature on the role of social inequality and anomie in the commitment of this type of crimes.

The second part of the course will look at economic crimes and globalization, including new opportunities for offenses, circulation of potential offenders, trans-national victimization and harms. Glocal prevention and deterrence mechanisms will also be addressed.

The last part of the course will present existing compliance and control mechanisms for economic offenses. Supported in evidence-based results, axisting different models will be presented as well as benefits and limitations of each.

Clinical Criminology and Risk of Recidivism Assessment

Criminological Intervention in the Justice System

MCO106 - ECTS

- Knowledge of the main theoretical models for offender rehabilitation and supervision

- Knowledge about intervention programs with adults and young offenders, as well with specific offender populations.

- Develop skills to planning and implementing evidence-based interventions with offenders

Restorative Justice and Victimology

MCO107 - ECTS

The main objective of this course is to provide an overview of the major theoretical and empirical developments in the field of restorative justice practices and processes. This approach will prioritize the integration between restorative justice and victimological perspectives.

Specific objectives include:

Presenting a comprehensive and critical approach to the needs of victims and their position within the criminal justice system.

Presenting a comprehensive and critical understanding of restorative justice, based on knowledge of key concepts and principles.

Promoting research and analyse of the application of restorative justice in the context of violent crimes (sexual crimes, domestic violence, homicide).

Research Methodologies and Epistemology II

MC112 - ECTS

This curricular unit, divided into two parts - qualitative methodologies and quantitative methodologies – follows Research Methodologies and Epistemology I, taught in the 1st semester, aiming to complement the training provided by that curricular unit. Thus, its main objective is to provide conditions for students to deepen and solidify knowledge about qualitative analysis and quantitative analysis techniques, not only in theoretical terms, but especially at the applied level and especially using specific software. In this way, it is intended to enable students to understand the scientific literature with which they are confronted and to develop their own scientific production, namely within the scope of their Master's research projects in Criminology.

Situational and Community Prevention

-To know how to define conceptually and identify the main theoretical orientations underlying situational crime prevention and community prevention.

-To be able to identify the different policies, models and logics underlying intervention of each type of crime prevention.

-To know the major situational prevention and community programs both at the national level and at international level.

Issues in Criminal Law and Procedural Criminal Law II

MC111 - ECTS - Provide an overview of current doctrine on specific and controversial topics of criminal evidence;
- Deepen the theoretical and dogmatic bases of the studied institutes, as well as their projections in
terms of legal regulation and jurisprudential solutions;
- Promote autonomous and critical reflection on central problems of the criminal procedure.
