Wireless network at FDUP

FDUP Wireless

Part of the e-U Virtual Campus initiative, a project supported by the Information Society Operational Programme (POSI) (POSI), coordinated by the Knowledge Society Agency (UMIC) and developed and maintained by the Foundation for National Scientific Computing (FCCN), FDUP's wireless network has 41 Access Points spread over 4 floors of the building.

The FDUP wireless network is accessible to all University of Porto students and staff, as well as authorised visitors from other national and international institutions.

The increase in the movement of the academic population across Europe and their mobility requirements increasingly suggest the need to connect the Wi-Fi infrastructure created as part of the e-U Virtual Campus project to the European eduroam initiative.

The eduroam (Education Roaming)initiative is a project by TERENA (Trans-European Research and Education Networking Association), whose main objective is to provide a mobility service between campuses for the entire European academic community (already extended to non-European countries).

To this end, the infrastructures created as part of the e-U Virtual Campus project were upgraded and integrated into the European eduroam network. Portuguese users will now be able to roam the wireless networks of various higher education institutions in the European Union and, in the same way, users from international institutions will be able to use the Portuguese infrastructures in a completely transparent way.

The main technical difference between the e-U and eduroam infrastructures lies in the encryption method used to protect user data. In fact, while the protocol used to authenticate users in both cases is IEEE 802.1x (EAP-TTLS and/or PEAP), eduroam uses the WPA (Wi-Fi Protected Access) standard with TKIP (Temporal Key Integrity Protocol) as the encryption algorithm, thus guaranteeing higher security when accessing the wireless network.

Above, in the configuration menu, you'll find the options you need to start taking advantage of this feature right away.
