Students are expected to be able to critically address and discuss the types of environmental crimes, as well as formal and informal social reaction to such crimes.
More specifically, students should be able to:
- Characterize Green Criminology;
- Identify types of crimes;
- Relate environmental crimes with its consequences and harms;
- Relate environmental crimes with other criminological topics such as serious organised crime, economic crimes and corruption, and violence;
- Know the different national and international actors and mechanisms for preventing and fighting environmental crimes, including the criminal justice system as well as civil society;
- Be aware of methodological challenges for the empirical study of environmental crimes;
- Know the main results of empirical studies about the causes of, public perception o and effectiveness of social control to environmental crimes;
- Develop autonomous critical analysis about such crimes and harms.

B. The etiology of environmental crimes
1. Methodological challenges for quantitative and qualitative research
2. Empirical criminological research: individual, cultural, economic and systemic factors;
C. Social reaction to environemtnal crimes
1. National and international actors and mechanisms for preventing and fighting environmental crimes
2. Empirical criminological research: preventives and repressive strategies; local, national and global actions; effectiveness.
Theoretical-practical classes where contents will be presented and analysis, namely with the use of presentation and including debates among students.
Classes will also have case studies of current situations, namely via the use of visual methods and supports (e.g. documentaries).
Invited (national an foreign) speakers will present their experiences in fighting environmental crimes in the criminal justice system, and in researching relevant topics.
