Understand the historical and theoretical evolution of social control systems.
Know different forms of governance and how they relate to normativity and social control.
Explore contemporary theories on surveillance and their relation to social control.
Discuss the ethical and political implications of surveillance and control practices in contemporary societies.
Acquire critical concepts and understand the main theoretical developments and empirical applications of the subjects taught;
Develop the ability to apply the concepts rigorously and acquire analytical skills for the theoretical models learned, using them to concrete problems related to criminal phenomena;
Develop critical analysis skills, both at the conceptual and applied levels.
1. Fundamental Concepts
The relationship between social control, norm, and deviance. The different conceptions of society and their implications for control and normativities. Current transformations in social control. Relationship with social order.
2. Classical Perspectives on Social Control
2.1. Émile Durkheim: social norms, cohesion, and the role of social institutions;
2.2. Karl Marx: social control as an instrument of class domination;
2.3. Max Weber: authority and legitimacy; bureaucratic rationality as a form of control.
3. Contemporary Perspectives on Control
3.1. Foucault, governmentality, power, and bio-power;
3.2. The culture of control (Garland), the dispersion of (post)social control (Cohen), and risk management (Feeley & Simon).
4. Surveillance and Social Control in Contemporary Society
4.1. Theorizing surveillance: from the panopticon to new forms of control;
4.2. Ethical and political implications of surveillance and social control.
Theoretical-practical classes, combining the exposition of theoretical content with autonomous literature review. Students will complement the knowledge transmitted in class with the analysis of key readings in each module.
