Objectives

The development of a systematic integration and analysis of the theoretical and empirical contents learned
during the course, in order to train skills and prepare the students for the preparation and conduction of an individual research project.

Learning outcomes and competences

It is expected that at the end of the semester the students have developed:
- autonomy in conducting a  scientific literature review and the hability to apply methodological and  conceptual analysis to an individual  research project.
- Ability to critically reflect on the criminological  study objects, in particular about the  elected theme for the individual project.

Program

The orientation seminar provides a space for the
integration of the acquired knowledge and the development of methodological skills relevant to the future development of an individual research project leading to the dissertation. Thus, the contents are conditioned by the initiative of the students, properly framed in the research lines of the School of  Criminologyl. The work developed by the students should be theoretical and empirically supported in the major areas of Criminology, namely juvenile delinquency, clinical criminology, experimental criminology, comparative criminology, victimology, security and social control.

Teaching methods and learning activities

The teaching methodology is mainly interactive. It is expected that the students acquired knowledge by systematic literature reviews with special emphasis on methodological training. These reviews will be guided and debated during classes.
The work developed should comprise the selection and critical analysis of scientific papers in a criminological topic selected by the student.
The teacher will supervise the elaboration and the
developments of the work, through the presentation of specific issues, bibliographical recommendations, methodological training and development of conceptual skills.
Evaluation: Distributed evaluation with final report.
