Objectives

Develop a systematic reflection and integration of theoretical and empirical knowledge acquired throughout the course, around the larger areas of criminology (e.g. juvenile delinquency, criminology, clinical, experimental criminology, comparative criminology, victimology, security and social control).

Learning outcomes and competences

In this curricular unit the student should be able to identify a relevant topic in the criminological field, to identify and conduct a systematic review of the scientific literature relevant both at the theoretical level, and at the empirical level on this issue, define and delimit an study research object, identify research hypotheses and integrate them into the major theoretical frameworks.

The tutorial seminar pretends to provide the integration of the theoretical and empirical knowledge with the development of an individual research project directed to the dissertation. Thus, the research topics will be determined by the student within the diferent research areas of the School of Criminology. Theoretical and empirical projects in the major areas of Criminology will be elected, mainly Juvenile delinquency, clinical criminology, experimental criminology, comparative criminology, victimology, security and social control.
Scientific literature searches are explained in order to delimitate research objects and define research objectives, preparing later selection of methodologies for data collection and analysis (namely in the Orientation Seminar II)

Teaching methods and learning activities

The teaching methodology is essentially interactive. Thus, students should converge the  acquired knowledge through literature reviews and critical reading of scientific articles in a specific research topic. The teachers will supervise the elaboration and work progress of the students, through bibliographical recommendations, methodological training and development of conceptual skills.

The final work of UC, with a limit of 20 pages, is a text in which summarizes the literature reviewed that illustates the sate of the art of the theme selected by each student.
