Analyze and reflect critically on the legal framework of civil law applicable to family property relationships.Deepen and update knowledge on the regulation of international family relationships, based primarily on recent EU legislative initiatives in this subject.
It is intended that students attain a deep knowledge of the legal regime applicable to property relationships considering both its domestic and international dimension and are able to critically discuss and analyze certain aspects of these regimes.

I. The scope of the legal protection of the family. The legal notion of "family"- challenges and implications.
II. The de facto union and its legal effects - recognition of the growing legal effect of de facto union.
III. The patrimonial component of marriage. a) The private autonomy of the spouses b) The property relations between spouses and third parties. c) The settlement of marriage in case of divorce, especially the sharing of common property and compensatory credit provided for in art. 1676. º.
IV. Civil Liability in the family - relevance and specific application in family issues.
V. The maintenance obligation, particularly to maintenance between former spouses and between parents-children - substantive and procedural issues.
VI. International family relationships. Marriage and de facto union). a) Formal requirements. b) Substantive requirements.c) Personal and patrimonial effects. d) The divorce and separation.
Exposure of the syllabus and illustration with real life situations. Analysis of Portuguese and foreign jurisprudence on the matter.
