Objectives

The students must be able to:
-Acquire knowledge in qualitative and quantitative research methods and its recent developments in the criminological field.
-Acquire training in reading and understand scientific work carried out in both qualitative and quantitative criminological domains.
-Lead students to formal thinking applied to social problems in general and to the study of crime and justice in particular.
-To develop knowledge and methodological and technical skills (qualitative and quantitative) that could converge to the individual research project of the student.

Program

1. Theoretical and epistemological approaches to the research methods. The development of the scientific research in criminology: theory, methodology and epistemology.
2. Introduction to the scientific research in Criminology and Criminal Justice: theory and methodology.
3. Quantitative and Qualitative research methods. Mixed methods and areas of application.
4. General steps of quantitative research.
5. Quantitative research methods
5.1. Research design: experimental, quasi-experimental and observational (cross-sectional and longitudinal) research designs.
5.2. Sampling strategies: instruments, types of sampling and sample size. Central questions according to the research question and hypothesis.
5.3. Validity, Reliability, and Triangulated strategies.
6. Theoretical and epistemological approach to qualitative research.
7. The process of qualitative research.
7.1. The qualitative collecting data methods: the qualitative interview, observation and documental analysis.
7.2. The quality of qualitative research: objectivity, reliability, validity and generalization.
