Objectives

This course aims to provide:
- An overview of the main sociological perspectives.
- An understanding of the main sociological approaches of deviance and societal reaction.

Program

I- Introduction
1. Key concepts of sociological thinking
2. Comte, Marx, Durkheim e Weber.
3. Functionalism, symbolic interactionism, ethnometodology and “social construction of reality”.

II-Psychosocial and sociological approaches of deviance, delinquency and societal reaction.
1.Tarde, Durkheim and the Chicago School
2. Deviance, delinquency and social structure (anomie, strain and delinquent subcultures).
3. Deviance, delinquency and social process (social learning and differential association)
4. Control theories (containment and social bond).
5. Interactionism and societal reaction theories
6. Conflict theories

III- Delinquent association: delinquent peer group bonding, co-offending, delinquent networks, gangs and organised crime.

Teaching methods and learning activities

Theoretical sessions are used to describe and discuss the main contents of the program. Practice sessions are orientated toward the analysis and discussion of scientific literature and other resources previously prepared by the students. The course will also provide tutorial sessions.
