Abstract (EN): The aims of this study were to define overweight and obesity prevalence and to verify familial aggregation of body mass index. The study sample comprised 647 children (289 males and 358 females, aged 8-16 years), selected in the Porto region. Body mass index was used to assess obesity. The percentage of body fat was estimated by triceps and subscapular skinfolds. We found that 14.9% of the boys and 17.3% of the girls are overweight, 5.2% of the boys and 8.5% of the girls were obese, maternal body mass index was significantly correlated with sons values and paternal with daughters values.
