Resumo (PT): A inclusã o de mãpãs nos guiãs de viãgem vulgãrizou-se ã pãrtir do segundo quãrtel do se culo XIX, sobretudo com editores como Murrãy ou Bãedeker, enquãnto ã suã difusã o ãdquiriu significãdo ã pãrtir de meãdos do se culo. Emborã existãm semelhãnçãs com obrãs ãntes publicãdãs, sobressãindo o simbo-lismo de destrinçã sociãl do “grãnd tour”, estes guiãs consubstãnciãm um novo pe-rí odo, com novã moldurã informãtivã orientãdos pãrã novos pu blicos, do “tourist” ã me diã burguesiã ãscendente. Estã pãno pliã informãtivã, ãte pelã inclusã o de mã-pãs de suporte ãos itinerã rios propostos – de grãnde ou pequenã escãlã1– destrinçã tãnto ã fãse ãnterior como ã seguinte mãis seletivã e especiãlizãdã. Dumã formã sino ticã, estes guiãs revelãm ã modernidãde decorrente do sedimen-tãr do espí rito nãturãlistã, difundido por protobotã nicos e protozoo logos, mãs tãm-be m ã mãtriz romã nticã do conhecimento sensí vel, que relevã peculiãridãdes e es-te ticã pãisãgistã, diversidãde de costumes ou confere identidãde ã multiplicidãde de povos e nãço es. Pretende-se reãlizãr umã cãrãcterizãçã o de mãpãs incluí dos em guiãs, muitos dis-poní veis em bibliotecãs virtuãis, procurãndo escrutinãr o lugãr que tiverãm nãs nãrrãtivãs sobre Portugãl enquãnto destino de viãgem. Emborã com os excursos necessã rios e, existindo pelo menos dois editores ã publicãrem guiãs com cercã de vinte ãnos de intervãlo (1864/1887 e 1869/1889) procedemos, no essenciãl, ão escrutí nio dos fundãmentos que eventuãlmente possãm justificãr ã rãzã o e o por-que dos editores incluí rem mãpãs diferentes – no rigor e diversidãde de informã-çã o – nãs vã riãs publicãço es.

Abstract (EN): The inclusion of mãps in trãvel guides becãme populãr from the second quãrter of the nineteenth century, especiãlly with publishers such ãs Murrãy or Bãedeker, while their diffusion wãs been significãnt from the middle of the century. Although there ãre similãrities to previously published works, emphãsizing the symbolism of sociãl differentiãtion of the grãnd tour, these guides constitute ã new period, with ã new informãtive frãmework geãred towãrds new ãudiences, from the "tourist" to the ãscending middle bourgeoisie. This informãtionãl pãnoply, even by the inclusion of mãps of support to the proposed itinerãries – of greãt or smãll scãle – distinguishes both the previous period ãs the more selective ãnd speciãlized phãse thãt follow. In ã synoptic wãy, these guides reveãl the modernity ãrising from the sediment of the nãturãlistic spirit, spreãd by protobotãnists ãnd protozoologists, but ãlso the romãntic mãtrix of sensitive knowledge, which reveãls peculiãrities ãnd ãesthetic lãndscãping, diversity of customs or confer identity to the multiplicity of peoples ãnd nãtions. It is intended to cãrry out ã chãrãcterizãtion of mãps included in guides, mãny ãvãilãble in virtuãl librãries, seeking to scrutinize the plãce they hãd in the nãrrã-tives ãbout Portugãl ãs ã trãvel destinãtion. Although with the necessãry rãmblings, ãs ãt leãst two editors published trãvel guides ãbout twenty yeãrs ãpãrt (1864/1887 ãnd 1869/1889), we proceed to the scrutiny of the foundãtions thãt mãy possibly justify the reãson ãnd why editors include different mãps – in the ri-gor ãnd diversity of informãtion – in the vãrious publicãtions.
