The Station of Maritime Zoology Dr Augusto Nobre

DESCRITPION

The Station of Maritime Zoology “Dr Augusto Nobre” of Faculty of Sciences of University of Porto (FCUP) was founded at 1914 by Augusto Nobre, Professor of the Faculty, who considered essential for the practical teaching of Zoology and research in Maritime Biology the existence of a laboratory of Maritime Zoology close by the Faculty, which motivated its construction in Avenida de Montevideu in Porto maritime side.
In 1927 its installations were expanded by the addition of a Public Aquarium formed by 36 exposition aquariums with animals of fresh, brackish and salty water, with access from the main entrance of the central building. This included an entrance hall with a large tank for bigger animals and, around it, fresh water aquariums and terrariums for amphibians. The Aquarium was kept open to the public up to 1965, but the sea induced deterioration determined its closing. Nowadays, it is functional the central building that keeps the original features, preserved during the repairs and improvements performed along the years for a better adequacy of this infrastructure to the objectives looked for with its installation. The Station provides support to the graduate and post-graduate training in Biology of the Biology Department of FCUP, as well as to the R&D undertaken in the domains of Maritime Biology, Ecology, Environmental Sustainability, Fish Nutrition and Aquaculture.
