1 Research Grant (M/F)

Call open for applications for a research grant (Master's Degree) within the framework of project “Safe Cities - Innovation for Building Urban Safety”, with the reference POCI-01-0247-FEDER-041435, co-financed by the European Regional Development Fund (FEDER), through the Operational Programme for Competitiveness and Internationalization (COMPETE 2020), under the PORTUGAL 2020 Partnership Agreement, under the following conditions:

Scientific Area: Information and Communication Technologies

Admission requirements:

  • Hold the degree of Master in Computer Science, Networks and Information Systems Engineering, Electrical and Computer Engineering or related area.

  • Be a student enrolled in a PhD in the field of Information and Communication Technologies or alternatively be a student enrolled in a non-degree programme and already holding a Bachelor (licenciatura) and masters' degree

  • Have experience in communication networks (IP, Ethernet, 802.11). Knowledge on SDN, multicast and audio over IP will be valued.

If the degree has been awarded by a foreign higher education institution, it must comply with the provisions of the Decree-Law no. 66/2018, of august 16th, and any formalities established there must be fulfilled until the time of signing the contract.

The candidate who will obtain a place placed in an eligible place for the final approved contracting of the present bidding process, will run an non-extendable period of 10 working days, counted from the notification of the final approved final ordering, for presentations, at the FCUP Human Resources, requests the conclusion of the contract.

Failure to comply with the provisions of the preceding paragraph determines the exclusion from the contest.

Work plan: The work to be developed will consist on the comparison of different network frameworks with protocols for transporting audio controlled using SDN. The tests to be done will include statistics about the performance of the different frameworks, producing quantitative measures about the differences.

The tasks can be adjusted depending on its feasibility in the project. All changes implying the grant holder´s work in other tasks will be submitted to prior approval of the funding authority – AICEP.)

 

Applicable regulations for this call are:

-Law Nº. 40/2004, of 18th August, in its current wording (Statutes of Scientific Research Fellow) and Regulation of Research Grants of Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia, in force ( https://www.fct.pt/apoios/bolsas/regulamento.phtml.pt).

-Law Nº 66/2018 of 16th August (Regime Jurídico de Reconhecimento de graus académicos e diplomas de Ensino Superior atribuídos por Instituições de Ensino Superior Estrangeiras).

Work place: The work will be developed in the department of Computer Science of the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Porto (FCUP), under the scientific supervision of Professor Pedro Miguel Alves Brandão.

Grant duration: Initial duration of 6 months, with starting date predicted to July 2020, on an exclusive basis regime, eventually renewable up to the end of the project limited to a maximum of 4 years for a student enrolled in a PhD.

If the contracted candidate is a student enrolled in a non-degree programme and is already holding a Bachelor (licenciatura) and masters' degree, the grant is renewable only up to more 6 months.

 

Payments:

  1. The grant stipend amounts to 1064,00¤ according to the table of values of the grants awarded directly by FCT, I.P. in the Country (https://www.fct.pt/apoios/bolsas/valores.phtml.pt ) Payment will be made by bank transfer.

  2. Seguro Social Voluntário: As long as the scholarship lasts 6 months or more, and in compliance with the provisions of article 10 of Law no. 40/2004, the scholarship holder will be entitled to assume, by FCUP, the charges resulting from contributions that apply to the first of the steps referred to in article 36 of Decree-Law no. 40/89, of 1 February, with the increase in charges arising from the option for a higher incidence base on its own.

  3. In addition to this allowance, the fellow will be covered by personal accident insurance.

 

Selection procedure:

  1. Curriculum evaluation with the following criteria:

  1. Master degree in the area (Computer Science, Networks and Information Systems Engineering, Electrical and Computer Engineering or similar) 5 points; Master degree in related area ‐ 2 points;

  2. Research experience in the area of communication networks; (1 to 5 points according to duration and relevance to call).

  3. Publications in the area of the call (1 to 5 points according to relevance to call).

 

  1. Interview

The 4 candidates with highest curricular assessment will be selected for an interview (max 5 points).

The final grade is computed adding the curricular assessment with the interview.

The jury reserves the right not to assign the scholarship in question, if the evaluation of the applications and/or their adequacy to the project goals is not satisfactory.

Advertisement/notification of final decision: The results of the evaluation, ordered by final classification, will be released to the candidates by email.

Deadline for applications and form of presentation of the applications:

Applications must be formalized by email to pabranda@fc.up.pt and recrutamento@fc.up.pt, should clearly state in the subject the reference (76 Bolseiro Mestre (FCUP) n.º 1 Sub-Projeto 1), and must include Motivation Letter, Proof of being a doctoral student in the area of ICT or similar, Certificates evidencing academic degree, Curriculum Vitae, and other documents considered relevant by the applicant.

All the documents should be attached to the application email, without using any links to online platforms. In order to ensure the readability of the all documents, the preferred format is Portable Document Format (.pdf).
