Understanding what GIS is and what it can be used for. Learn the basic aspects related to the GIS.

Learning outcomes and competences

Become familiar with the general operations and applications of GIS and data models (raster and vector data). Students will be capable of doing several analyses in GIS.

1. Principles and fundaments of GIS.
2. Vector data: data acquisition, data organization and analysis with environmental data.
3. Open source GIS software. Environmental applications.
4. Geographical databases.
5. Raster data: acquisition, analysis and data manipulation.
6. 3D terrain analysis.  Digital Elevation Models.
7. Several GIS applications.
8. GeoStatistics principles.

Teaching methods and learning activities

Classes of type TP include theoretical and practical classes (based on exercises in GIS software). The teaching resources include the audiovisual equipment as well as the several GIS software (proprietary and open source).  In the lectures of type “O” possible doubts about the various topics of the syllabus will be clarified and support to the performance of practical computational work will be given.

Eligibility for exams

Presence in 75% of the lectures.

Calculation formula of final grade

The evaluation will be carried out by a practical exam in a GIS software (40% of the final classification) and a final written test. The students must have a minimum of 8 in each of the evaluation parts.
The final classification is the mark obtained in the final exam (T)  with a weight of 60%  and 40% to the practical evaluation (P):
CF=T *0.6 + P*0.4.

Due to the pandemic (COVID-19), part of the face-to-face assessment may be replaced by remote assessment, maintaining the same assessment criteria.
