The objective of this Unit is to provide students with a set of seminars on various specialized topics that are not addressed in the other units of the MSc. These seminars are intended to be a formative and didactic complement and will be mainly delivered by specialists, either researchers (national or foreign who travel to Porto in the framework of projects or collaborations with the staff of the MSc), or professionals from companies with activities related with Remote Sensing (RS). Former students of the FCUP MSc in RS, which ran between 2000 and 2007, whose activity is Connected to Remote Sensing, will also be invited, aiming at transmitting students their academic and professional experience.

Learning outcomes and competences

At the end of the unit it is intended that students have extended their knowledge to other areas of RS, have been in contact with researchers and professionals with different experiences, have extended their critical and analytical sense, as well as their ability to perform autonomous work.

Working method



Seminars on topics related to the subject of the master's degree, which may be of a more scientific or technical content, given predominantly by national or foreign invited experts. Since the masters covers a vast area of applications the number of possible topics is large and will naturally vary from one year to the next.

Examples of possible topics:

- Coastal bathymetry with lidar

- Unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) sensors and range of applications

- Gravimetric Satellites

- Innovative applications of integrated GNSSS / INS systems

- Remote Detection of vegetation

- Remote sensing of urban areas

- etc.

Teaching methods and learning activities

The TP will consist of seminars, organized in advance taking into account the availability of the invited specialists and the relevance of the topics to the MSc.

The students will attend the various lectures given by national or foreign experts from the Remote Sensing community. After the lectures, the students will be motivated to research on one of the addressed topics, under the guidance of the unit coordinator and / or the specialist who presented the seminar.

In the lectures of type “O” possible doubts about the various topics of the seminars will be clarified and support to the performance of the individual report will be given.

Eligibility for exams

Attendance of classes is compulsory. The general rules of FCUP shall apply.

Calculation formula of final grade

The assessment is done through an individual report, in the format of a paper, on a topic chosen from the list of themes of the presented seminars. The evaluation includes an oral presentation and discussion of the work.

The final mark is the grade of the written paper (T) with a weighting of 70% and 30% for the oral discussion (O).

FM = T * 0.7 + O * 0.3.

Special assessment (TE, DA, ...)

The assessment method is the same as for regular students

Classification improvement

Students can use the methods predicted in the general University rules for mark improvement
