Objectives

The aim of this course is the planning and monitoring of a scientific project, oral and written communication in the form of a thesis on the work done.

Learning outcomes and competences

At the end of this course the student should be able: to develop skills in planning and monitoring a scientific project; to work autonomously, but in connection with a teamwork; to develop oral and written communication skills in science.

A scientific project is carried out in a research laboratory of the University, with the supervision of member staff of the Chemistry and Biochemistry Department of the University of Porto. The experimental work is carried out individually though integrated in a teamwork. At the end of the academic year the student has to write up an individual thesis which will be presented and discussed before a jury.

Given the nature of this course, there is no recommended bibliography. Depending on the nature of the work, the student and the supervisors shall choose/define the specific reading.

Teaching methods and learning activities

The work is mainly of experimental nature and is done under the supervision of a member staff of the Chemistry and Biochemistry Department. Half a year on, a scientific seminar is organized where all the students have to present an oral communication on the working progress. At the end of the academic year the student has to write a thesis, which is presented and discussed before a jury, in a final oral exam. The final grade awarded by the jury takes into account the student's performance on the exam, and also the skills demonstrated throughout the work.
