Objectives

To confer the students basic/introductory theoretical concepts in Organic Chemistry.

Learning outcomes and competences

By the end of the course, the student should have acquired and understood basic concepts in Organic Chemistry. Briefly, the student should have acquired competences in

 1) identification of the main functional groups in organic compounds and how those groups affect compounds' physical and chemical properties;

2) basic organic nomenclature and stereochemistry;

3) recognizing main types of organic chemical reactions, their relevant intermediates and pathways;

4) establishing basic structure-reactivity relationships.

Program

LECTURES (28 h)

The program to be addressed in lectures will cover the topics of chapters 1 to 9 of the adopted book:

PART 1 – CARBON: INTEGRATED REVIEW OF FUNDAMENTAL CONCEPTS IN CHEMISTRY

1. Atoms. Connection between electronic configuration and reactivity.

2. Chemical bonding. Lewis structure and the octet rule.

PART 2 – ORGANIC CHEMISTRY

3. Saturated hydrocarbons. Isomers and stereoisomers.

4. Unsaturated hydrocarbons.

5. Alcohols, Phenols and their sulfur analogues.

6. Aldehydes and ketones.

7. Carboxylic acids and derivatives.

8. Amines and amides.

9. Organic stereochemistry in depth.

TUTORIALS (28 h)

In the 2015/16 course, this part of the programme will be exclusively devoted to tutorials, aimed at guiding students in the resolution of questions, quizzes and problems related with the organic chemistry concepts addressed in the lectures.

Mandatory literature

000087490. ISBN: 0-7167-7072-5

Complementary Bibliography

Carlos Corrêa, Maria Augusta Oliveira e Maria Luísa do Vale; Introdução à Nomenclatura da Química Orgânica, 2003

Teaching methods and learning activities

Lectures will follow a standard magisterial model, supported by multimedia tools.

All relevant info, teacher-student communication and course management will be made through the Moodle electronic platform.

Practical sessions will basically consist in tutorials for guided resolution of quizzes and problems related to topics addressed in lectures.
