Objectives

The teaching of this course aims the students to acquire integrated knowledge, understanding and interpretating the genesis and geological-structural evolution of the different geotectonic and stratigraphic units recognize in the Iberian Peninsula, and correlate it with equivalent units located elsewhere in the world, in a spatial and temporal multidisciplinary approach and covering knowledges in various areas of Geological Sciences.
The practical works have as main objective the knowledge and the geological and structural interpretation of geological mapping, as well as the observations in field works.
As competences and skills, reaching these goals, the student will be prepared to contextualize regionally or globally the area in which he will be working.

Learning outcomes and competences

This course is intended for students of the 1st cycle and the syllabus was defined in terms of objectives and skills to be acquired by students.
First is presented the different morpho-structural zones recognized for the Iberian Peninsula and respective boundaries are analyzed trough the distinction of geological and structural features, for the Iberian massive (varisc cycle), mesozoic edges (alpine cycle) and estuaries of major rivers. For each of the areas that compounds the Iberian massive and occuring in Portugal is made an integrated characterization of stratigraphy, tectonics, magmatism and metamorphism in relation with tectonic plates theory, and the Wilson cycle. The analysis of the geology of alpine cycle is focused on eustatic changes and related tectonic controls responsible for the sedimentary sequences, and also integrating the magmatism. In support, in addition to field work, geological mapping is analyzed and interpreted for the objectives presented above.

Teaching methods and learning activities

In the lectures the presentation and discussion of the issues, is made with data-show aid projecting slides with interpretative elements necessary to what is indicated on the geological maps; these elements are made available online to students. The observation, analysis and interpretation of geological maps is done also distributing the maps to students and formulating questions for which answer is required to construct evolutionary models from cartographic features. The field classes are a very good support for the recognition and analysis of the reality that is mapped.
Evaluation Type: Distributed evaluation with final examination.
Final examination consists of: Theoretical (12 points), and practical (8 points).
Eliminating condition: in a scale of 20 degrees, if equal or lower than the corresponding 7 degrees for each component.
Conditions Frequency: Required presence in the classes as statutary defined in the FCUP statutes.

Calculation formula of final grade

Theoretical examination (T) - 12 points
Theoretical and practical examination (TP) - 8 points
Final classification - T+TP
For evaluation greater then 17 points a oral examination is recquired.
For positive evaluation is recquired that in both examinations a minimun of 7 points (0-20 scale) being reached for each one.
