Objectives

Conduct field work in different geological settings, emphasizing different disciplines of geology. Sampling, data collection and interpretation. Prepare cartographic and geological report on the desktop, using additional laboratory work.

Learning outcomes and competences

The development of the course aims at development the student skills in:

- Develop skills for fieldwork in different geological contexts;

- Develop skills for cartographic documents.

Working method

Presencial

Program

1 - The specificity of the field work in geology
1.1 - Basic rules: planning, equipment and safety
1.2 - The facts and interpretations

2 - General Methodology of field work
2.1 - Basic Documents to support the field work: topographic maps, geological maps, aerial photography (orthophotomaps, ...), as well as modern and expeditious means of field location (GPS, ...) and after treatment if it's the case ( various software).
2.2 - Using cartography compass: orientation and measurement of data in the field
2.3 - Criteria for identifying and recording the observations in the field book
2.4 - Collection and representation of data at a given scale
2.5 - Scale of observation and representation of scales
2.6 - Sampling: representativeness, location and orientation

3 - Collection of objective data, factual descriptions of direct observation or measurement aspects that enable, in particular:
3.1 - Geometry of a lithic body (rock);
3.2 - Texture and mineralogy of the rocks;
3.3 - Description and measurement of the orientation of structures (stratification, fracturing, foliation, ...);
3.4 - Description of the type of geologic contacts.

4 - Collection and annotation of factual interpretations:
4.1 - The genetic interpretation of the meaning (or petrogenetic) data or factual descriptions;
4.2 - Interpretation of chronological relationships (partly objective, partly interpreted);

5 - Methods of fieldwork specific to different geological settings

6 - Interpretation of data collection and preparing the final report.
