Objectives

It is intended that students are able to apply the acquired technical knowledge to landscape architecture practice, in any professional environment: design, installation, inspection, maintenance and management of green spaces.

Learning outcomes and competences

Arboriculture 1) control the reference techniques for the installation of ornamental plants; 2) identify and address the main constraints for trees in the urban environment; 3) recognize the importance of a proper training of ornamental plants; 4) use available technology for inventory and management of trees in cities.

Meadows and lawns 1) identify and characterize the main grass species prescribing them properly; 2) use the reference techniques for the installation of various types of meadows and lawns.

Sustainable Management of Water 1) understand the rudiments of hydraulics; 2) master water conservation techniques.

Working method

Presencial

Pre-requirements (prior knowledge) and co-requirements (common knowledge)

Previous knowledge of pedology and hydrology, plant ecophysiology,  Landscape desgin and Plants in the urban landscape.
Simultaneous knowledge of Agriculture.

Program

Arboriculture 1. Planting, installing and maintaining evergreen shrubs and ornamental trees; 2. Tree health: signs and symptoms; diseases of street trees and gardens trees; 3. Tree Diagnosis in urban environment: the Visual Tree Assessment method (VTA); diagnosis supporting tools, tree risk assessment, the CODIT model; 4. Tree management in urban space: Databases and Geographic Information Systems.

Meadows and lawns 1. Characterization of the main grass species and alternative species: morphology and growth; climate adaptation,; 2. The environment of lawns: atmospheric, edaphic and biotic; 3. Meadows and lawns installation: soil preparation, aftercare facility; 4. Cultural operations: main cultural techniques (cutting, fertilization, irrigation) and others (scrolling, top dressing).

Sustainable Management of Water 1. Watering systems: implementation and automation; 2. Water Conservation: identification of the main problems, techniques for reducing consumption and waste of water.

Teaching methods and learning activities

The adopted methodology combines the lecture method with the discussion of the main themes, its applications in everyday life and analysis of case studies focusing on examples of good and bad practices considered relevant.

The development and application of knowledge will be further ensured by outdoor classes and field trips relating to each of the addressed subjects. The evaluation takes place at the end of each module covering both the theoretical and practical component.
